PCCS BOOKS was founded in 1993 in Manchester, England by Pete Sanders and Maggie Taylor-Sanders. We are a small publishing company specialising in books on counselling and psychotherapy with a focus on the person-centred approach and critical psychology. Since 1997 we have been based in Ross-on-Wye in the picturesque South Herefordshire Welsh Marches.
PETE SANDERS, with an invaluable 30 years in counselling in one guise or another, is a director of the company, commissions new titles and has learned enough about computers and typesetting to produce the books. But mainly Pete is the person whose ideas set us on the different paths we take. He also writes our bestselling books which is rather handy.
MAGGIE TAYLOR-SANDERS, an ex-English teacher, is our other company director. She puts Pete’s ideas into practice and keeps them more or less on track long after he’s moved on to another project. Since handing most of the accounting over to Jill Marsh, she is happier spending the majority of her time editing, typesetting and wishing she'd done a better job teaching kids how to use apostrophes correctly.
SANDY GREEN, a Canadian ex-patriate, is a wonderfully versatile person who ‘babysits’ the Llangarron office if Pete and Maggie grab a holiday. Since joining us she has trained in typesetting, copyediting and proofreading and has found her real niche in life. She makes perfectionists look sloppy and will chase down missing references for hours and is often found poring over various websites and texts for information on the subtle differences between UK and US English.
HEATHER ALLAN manages sales and publicity. She keeps abreast of the demands of retailers and ensures professionals, lecturers and students receive the information they need about our books. She organizes the pre- and post-publicity for new books, utilising the knowledge and enthusiasm of authors and editors to help spread the word. Occasionally she manages to tweak the interest of a newspaper journalist or BBC producer.
JILL MARSH is our full time administrator. She deals with order processing, customer service, chasing payments, bank reconciliations and dozens of other tasks that would make the average person blanch. She is famous in the office for the regularly-changing, brightly-coloured, spectacular pictures of nature on her computer screen.
SUE MORGAN organizes the daily packing and dispatch of all our orders. She had reached new levels of perfection in the job – never before have we had such low levels of under-supply or damaged returns!
DI ENGLISH administers our two membership databases – BAPCA and WAPCEPC – she's still reeling under the weight of capital letters and impenetrable acronyms! She is highly versatile, and can stand in to cover various aspects of Jill and Sue's jobs.
In addition to our staff on site there are others who work with us as editors and consultants
CRAIG NEWNES is mainly a dad and gardener, but also managed to fit in the role of Psychological Therapies Director for Shropshire Community and Mental Health NHS Trust until a near-fatal car accident in 2003 resulted in his retirement. Having made a remarkable recovery he edits the Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy and is one of the commissioning editors for our Critical Psychology Division.
TONY MERRY 2004 was a tragic year in Llangarron, with the untimely death of Tony Merry. As well as being Reader in Psychology at the University of East London, Tony was one of our commissioning editors and consultant for our person-centred list – he and his wife Jan lived a short walk away and much of the consulting was done in the local over a pint. He was invaluable to Pete as a friend and colleague for bouncing ideas off, being encouraging and having a keen eye for a good book. As one of the foremost person-centred counsellor trainers and writers in the UK, if not the world, it was wonderful to have him around. It hardly seems adequate to say that we all miss him here and the person-centred community world-wide will miss his scholarly contribution and his down-to-earth approach to life.
