Yvonne Bates

Yvonne Bates is committed to the development of an inclusive and collaborative therapeutic community, campaigning against the academic expropriation and professionalisation of practice. She is keen to challenge the myth of the therapist as expert and to encourage theorists, practitioners and policy makers to work in genuine partnership with clients to radically revise therapy in light of the challenges put forward by those clients. A trainer and facilitator in psychology and counselling, Yvonne was co-editor of Ipnosis, an independent journal for practitioners which was the first to offer a dedicated section for clients’ views and which enjoyed tremendous popularity. As someone who is wary of claims to expertise, Yvonne is reluctant to include her academic achievements in biographies such as this but would be willing to share this information upon request.
