This DVD presents a unique record of the events hosted by the University of Strathclyde in May 2006 to mark the retirement of Professor Dave Mearns. Run Time approx. 4 hours.
Detailed contents below

This DVD offers an opportunity to become acquainted with the ideas and teachings of some of the leading relational thinkers in the person-centred field. It includes:
• The ‘Dave Mearns Interview’
• The 2006 Mary Kilborn Lecture
• The ‘Meeting at Relational Depth’ conference, May 2006

In his introduction to the conference, Professor Mick Cooper of the Counselling Unit at the University of Strathclyde wrote: ‘The theme of this conference goes to the very heart of Professor Mearns’ work. Throughout … Dave has emphasised again and again the importance of the therapist being truly him or herself in the therapeutic encounter: of doing away with ‘lace curtains’ and ‘safety screens’ and of meeting the client as one genuine human being to another … of being an engaged, passionate, caring presence’.

Contents
The 2006 Mary Kilborn Lecture. Prof Dave Mearns: The humanity of the counsellor. A mix of personal reflections on Dave’s experiences of powerful human relationships, an analysis of the importance of a shared humanity in modern day counselling and psychotherapy and a challenge to become politically sophisticated in our dealings with the institutions of society.

Dave Mearns and Lorna Carrick: The Dave Mearns Interview. This interview examines Dave’s career and some of the current challenges for the counselling profession.

Dr Charles O’Leary: Carl Rogers in dialogue. How Carl Rogers’ ‘way of being’, found in his books and recordings, can offer meaningful dialogue for practitioners at work almost twenty years after his death.

Prof Brian Thorne: The bishop and the poacher: Spiritual and existential challenges of intimacy. How the concepts of relational depth and self-acceptance lead to an understanding of intimacy which provides a hopeful response to some of the most urgent challenges of our contemporary culture.

Prof John McLeod: Relational depth from the point of view of the client. Current research suggests that a fuller appreciation of relational depth from the point of view of the client discloses aspects of relational connectedness which may often be hidden from practitioners.

Prof Peter F. Schmid: The challenge of the other: Towards dialogic psychotherapy and counselling. What does it mean to be called to respond to the existential disclosure of a person in the very moment of meeting?

Drs Elke Lambers: Relational depth and supervision. In supervision, the humanity that is at the core of the therapeutic encounter can be fully acknowledged and celebrated.

With over 4 hours of material including PowerPoint slides, this DVD is suitable for all those interested in developing their work with clients or training to be counsellors or supervisors.
